A gem color antique cushion cut 9ct Purple Garnet (Rhodolite).
Origin: Rajasthan, India.
Ten years ago India produced top "Grape /
Purple" garnets. Since then production has slowed
to a trickle. For an even shorter time, Sri Lanka produced
top stones. Today Africa sources the largest quantity,
but stones do not have the intense saturation of India
or Sri Lanka. In fact, most of the African garnet have
a red or brownish red secondary color, moderate to light
saturation and often a hazy appearance.
The very best in purple garnet is a strongly saturated
pure purple/violet with sharp "crystal." Stone
of this nature over 5cts are ultra-rare and much more
costly than easily available $10-$20/ct one to three carat
sizes. The fine orchid or "cranberry" color
with excellent transparency are equally considered as
the best. Top collectors should seek stones in excessive
of 5cts, with medium tones, strong saturation, and as
little red secondary color as possible.
The above stone is 85% tone (medium-dark) with
loupe clean clarity. The brilliance is 80-100% with excellent
symmetry and ideal 63% depth. The cutting is very good
to exellent. The size and shape is ideal. I would describe
the color as "cranberry".
The stone shows an almost pure purple with very
very little red secondary color and sharp clarity/crystal.
The saturation is medium strong.
The source is Rajasthan, India. I prefer to source
locally (India). I have visited the mine, studied, purchased,
and had rough faceted. I find it is unreasonable to purchase
10 kilograms of rough and get a single 'gem' quality stone.
So, I befriended many cutters/manufacturers and frequent
their shops. They call me when larger 'gem' quality stones
are cut because the Indian markets would rather consume
the African material at dollars per carat.
Gemstone includes Switzerlands GRS certificate.
