An extremely fine color 8 1/2 carat Moonstone. Origin:
India.
At one time, Sri Lanka (Meetiyagoda) produced the
finest quality moonstone in the world, but production
stopped in 1987. India continues to mine today and a fraction
of a percent rival the very best Sri Lankan stones. The
Indian stones are considered the best stones available
today. The third and largest source is Africa, but almost
all of the African production has a yellowish skin color.
"Gem" quality moonstones will display
a crystal clear body with a very strong blue-white opalescence
(adularescence) floating across their surface. Commercial
stones have a strong 'whole' milk white body color (possibly
brown secondary), poorer clarity (stress marks) and semi-blue
or silver-white sheen. Gem quality sizes over 5cts are
rare and more than 10ct command strong premiums.
A second variety of moonstone is produced in India.
They are called "Rainbow moonstones" Gem quality
"Rainbows" have the same body color as the "Blue"
moonstone, but instead of a blue-white sheen, they will
display a multicolored adularescense. The finest "gems"
of this variety have a reddish orange or occasional lavender
color with blue and green. Some people call the Blue moonstone
Rainbow, but true Rainbow are more costly.
The stone above is extremely fine, slightly less
than 'gem', quality. The body color is a light silver-white
skim milk color. The clarity is very lightly included
with a single small veil toward the back corner. Almost
loupe clean. The sheen (power) is medium strong blue-white.
The stone has very good proportions and ideal 8ct size.
Moonstone should be worn with care. The hardness
is 6-6.5 on the Mohs scale and often have strong cleavage. |
Price: $350
